We are looking to join the Sleep Out America movement on Friday, November 16th, 2018. This movement is intended to raise funds for and awareness of homeless youth across the nation. This population is at risk for developing serious mental health and substance abuse issues as well as other problems. We are hoping to inspire the SCSU community and provide staff and students with the opportunity to get involved and further educate them to help this population in their current and future careers.
While the national focus of Sleep Out America is particularly focused on homeless youth, we would like to expand this to shed light on the food instability and housing insecurity of college students. This year, 4.2 million young people will find themselves without a safe stable place to sleep. Events are being hosted across the nation, consisting of students and other community groups volunteering to spend the night outside to show solidarity with the homeless youth of America.
We will sleep outside on the quad on the night of November 16th. This is a rain or shine event, intended to give participants the opportunity to understand what our homeless youth experience every day. We are planning to broaden this event by including: guest speakers to share their experiences of homelessness; a drive to collect food, toiletries and warm clothing donations; and information tables from local shelters and agencies that serve the homeless which can share information as well as soliciting volunteers.
