John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts
Actor and Southern alumnus Dan Lauria (This Is Us, The Wonder Years) joins actress Wendie Malick (This Is Us, Just Shoot Me, Hot in Cleveland, Frasier) in The Guys, a play by Anne Nelson, about the aftermath of the September 11 attacks in New York City. Lauria plays Nick, a FDNY captain who lost most of his men that day. Malick plays Joan, a writer who helps Nick prepare their eulogies. In the process, Nick and Joan discover friendship and shared love for the spirit of the city. As they make their way through the emotional landscape of grief, they draw on humor, tango, the appreciation of craft in all its forms -- and the enduring bonds of common humanity.
The play debuted off-Broadway at The Flea Theater on December 4, 2001, directed by Jim Simpson and starring Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray.
Since 2001, The Guys has been presented in 48 US states and in the Czech Republic, Argentina, Japan, Italy and Poland. The New York Post described the play as a "sad and touching" piece "about the braveries of grief."
